Dr. Wolfgang Vyslozil has been voted in as the new Rector of St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences.
Dr. Vyslozil will assume his new office on 1 May 2009. As Rector he will head the Kollegium, the highest academic body of University of Applied Sciences which is in charge of all matters relating to teaching and academic procedures. Wolfgang Vyslozil succeeds Alois Frotschnig, who led the Kollegium since the retirement of Karl Dvorak earlier this year.
Dr. Alois Frotschnig, Head of IT and Media, and Dr. Angela Fritz, Head of Business and Media, were both voted Vice-Rectors.
In his new role, Mr. Vyslozil's goal is to work towards an "entrepreneurial university" which strives first and foremost to secure the future employability of its graduates. Teaching and research should become even more interdisciplinary, Mr. Vyslozil said in his inaugural speech, and he stressed the importance for a higher-education institution to operate both regionally and internationally. A further focus of his work will be to make the University of Applied Sciences more competitive and to strengthen all marketing efforts.
The Kollegium's vote for Wolfgang Vyslozil was acclaimed by the managers of St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences, Gabriela Fernandes and Gernot Kohl. "We are very proud to have gained a rector with such expertise in the media industry, and look forward to co-operating with him", they said in a statement.
Wolfgang Vyslozil was born in Meiningen, Germany, in 1945 and grew up in Klosterneuburg, Lower Austria. He has a PhD in Communication Studies and Journalism from the University of Salzburg and studied Business Administration at the University of Linz. He held management positions at the Austrian newspaper "Die Presse" and in other media enterprises and from 1982 to 2008 headed the Austrian Press Agency APA. Since his retirement from APA, he has worked as a lecturer at Vienna University and St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences. In the course of his professional career, Mr. Vyslozil has been honoured with a number of prestigious awards.
