Numerical methods help to optimize hard disks

Thomas Schrefl gave an invited talk on the optimization of write heads for magnetic data storage with extremely high density at the TMRC2009 conference.

The 20th International Conference on Magnetic Recording Heads and Systems was held from October 5-7, 2009 at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA. In his talk Thomas Schrefl showed how simulation methods can be used to find the optimal shape of a write head for writing data at a density of 4 Tbit/in2. Similar numerical optimization techniques are used in the Project OptWood. This project focuses on the improvement of geometry of  finger-joint profiles in wood.
